Liposuction Surgery
Ample preparation for liposuction surgery will help ensure that the procedure goes smoothly.
Before the Surgery
It’s important to have a thorough physical exam before your liposuction procedure so that your doctor can determine if you’re a good candidate. You should discuss any pre-existing medical conditions you have, and any medications (prescription or over-the- counter) or supplements that you take.
Be sure to ask your doctor what to expect during and after surgery, and about the potential risks and complications. Ask if she or he can give you any written materials to review about your procedure. Bring in a list of questions and concerns to review with your doctor. Remember, even after you’ve discussed your procedure and been approved for it, you can still change your mind.
You should arrange a ride to and from your surgery, as driving after liposuction procedures is not advised. Ask your doctor how long you will need assistance with transportation and other daily activities.
Pre-surgery Checklist

- Do not take aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medications unless directed by your doctor. Ask your doctor about additional medications to avoid and for how long prior to the surgery they should be avoided.
- If you smoke or chew tobacco, ask your doctor for advice on how long before the surgery you will need to quit. You will need to abstain post-surgery as well.
- Obtain a copy of your surgeon’s recovery directions.
- Arrange for someone to help you with everyday activities for at least two days after surgery.
- Fill related prescriptions, especially for pain medications, before surgery.
- Prepare and freeze up to two weeks of high-protein, low-sodium meals in advance. This will encourage healing and reduce swelling. Ask your doctor for other post-op dietary suggestions.
- Prepare a relaxation area for your recovery, including reading materials, pillows and blankets, baby wipes and lotion.
- Make sure a telephone, preferably with speakerphone, is near your bed and recovery area.
- Stock up on moisturizers, scar-minimizing creams, petroleum jelly, oatmeal soap and other topical products approved and recommended by your doctor.
- Consider buying a detachable showerhead and bath chair.
- Discuss other recovery treatments, like massage, with your doctor, and make appointments if recommended.
- Wear loose, easy-to-remove clothing on the day of the operation.
- Carefully follow all of your doctor’s directions regarding medication, food and drink and preparing for surgery.
After considering the above pre- liposuction surgery information, continue to liposuction recovery and get advice for promoting healing and reducing discomfort.
